Flying with pets

If you’re happy, they are too

Luxair allows pets on board (except on flights to London and Dublin) under certain conditions.

The rules about pets on planes vary between countries. You’ll need original copies of all the necessary documents: the export, import or transit permit, health certificate, and rabies vaccination certificate dated between 30 days and 3 years before your flight.

Don’t forget your pet’s European pet passport.

If your pet’s vaccinations aren’t up to date, you’ll have to fly home with it at your own expense.

The size and weight restrictions don’t apply to assistance animals for disabled passengers, which can travel in the cabin, without a cage and free of charge.

Pets weighing over 8 kg (AVIH) must go in the hold, in a suitable travelling cage.

Transportation fees of animals:

PETC Pet in cabin (≤ 8 kg) : 50 € one way

AVIH Animals in hold (> 8 kg):  100 € one way

Conditions for pets in the hold (> 8 kg = AVIH)

The animal must be able to stand or sit comfortably in its travelling cage. How to tell if your cage is the right size:

Height: your pet can stand without touching the top

Length: your pet’s length from nose to base of tail, plus the distance from its elbow to the ground

Width: twice the width of your pet’s shoulder blades.

The cage must be watertight, claw-proof, and escape-proof, and must allow your pet to be given food and water and cleaned without it escaping from the cage or injuring the handling staff.

It must have ventilation holes on more than one side, and be easy to recognise as a pet cage. Cages for carrying pets in the cabin are not suitable for carrying them in the hold.

Only one animal per cage.

Conditions for pets in the cabin (≤ 8 kg = PETC)

Pets weighing under 8 kg including their cage (PETC), may travel in the cabin.

Dogs, cats are permitted to travel in the cabin (if you are flying to or from the UK you must declare them as cargo).

Your pet must be clean, healthy, harmless, and must not smell or be pregnant.

It mustn’t inconvenience other passengers

It must be in a clean, watertight, claw-proof and escape-proof cage that is suitable for air travel and easy to handle. You can’t take it out of its cage on the plane.

Maximum sizes for the cage in the cabin are 45x23x25 cm or 45x42x20 cm.
