Aware of the impact of our activities on the environment and on the occasion of the Aviation Summit held in Toulouse in February 2022, Luxair has joined the signatories to reaffirm its support for the promise of "carbon neutrality by 2050".
In this respect, Luxair, for which social and environmental responsibility is a major principle, is introducing a new "carbon offset" scheme for the flights of Business Class and the flights of the LuxairTours Excellence travelers.
As of March 27, 2022, Luxair has purchased carbon credits to offset the CO2 emissions of its passengers' flights in Business Class and the flights of our LuxairTours Excellence packages, thus enabling them to contribute to more carbon-neutral flights. This offset will take the form of a contribution by Luxair to certified projects aiming at developing sustainable forest management, renewable energies and improving the living conditions of local communities.
Among a large selection of projects, Luxair chose three projects that are certified by Verra VCS and United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC). All of the chosen projects support UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Over 90% of the carbon in the Katingan Project is in the underlying peat soils. The area was under threat of conversion to an industrial acacia plantation. This would have resulted in the release of carbon through forest clearance, draining and burning of the underlying peat. Through performance-based carbon financing, the project offers a viable alternative to conversion, preventing the release of greenhouse gases equivalent to 447,110,760 tonnes of carbon dioxide over 60 years. That makes it the world’s largest forest-based avoided emissions project, with a total climate impact equivalent to the annual emissions of France.
The registered PoA aimed at disseminating high-efficiency cookstoves and point of use water filters to households, to overcome health issues in Rwanda. These technologies replace the traditional stoves used to produce drinking water, thus reducing the GHG emissions. In absence of the PoA, boiling water using fossil fuels/non-renewable woody biomass would have been the means of availing safe drinking water and cooking. The project technology provides safe drinking water without the use of non-renewable biomass and fossil fuel, and more efficient family cookstove thus leading to a reduction in green-house gas (GHG) emissions attributed to boiling of water and cooking in the baseline.
Developed by PT Bajradaya Sentranusa, it is a run-of-river hydroelectric power project in North Sumatera Province in Indonesia. The Project uses the existing flow of Asahan River to produce electricity and it has no large-scale dam or reservoir build for the project, as it is a run-of-river hydroelectric power plant.
The project is taking advantage of Asahan River flow that receives water from its natural source, Lake Toba. Geographically, the Project is located downstream of Lake Toba and upstream of the existing Asahan 2 (Siguragura) hydroelectric power plant, a large dam power plant built in 1981.
The objective of this project is to supply zero emission energy to Sumatra Grid, a grid with relatively carbon-intensive electricity supply that is located in Sumatera island and currently has no interconnection with the grid in other islands e.g. Java, Kalimantan.
This new carbon offset scheme is part of a global approach to reduce its environmental footprint implemented by Luxair through numerous actions such as the progressive renewal of our fleet, the continuous optimization of our flight operations and the reduction of single-use plastic on board our flights. As we want to keep moving in the direction of carbon neutrality, we will go further with the offset of C02 emissions from our flights.
