European ruling concerning restrictions on liquids

The European directive which limits the quantity of liquids in hand luggage came into force on 6th November 2006 and applies to all flights departing from an airport in the European Union, regardless of the destination and the nationality of the aircraft carrier.

What is considered a liquid according to the legislation?

As of the 6th November, liquids carried in hand luggage must be in individual containers each with a maximum capacity of 100 millilitres. These containers must be placed in a re-sealable, transparent plastic bag with a maximum capacity of one litre (e.g. a freezer bag for frozen food ) and this bag must be presented at the security checkpoints. Re-sealable means that the passenger may securely fasten the bag and that security personnel may be able to examine the contents, for example, press seal or zip lock bags.

The legislation has not been modified for liquids placed in hold luggage.

Exceptions

The regulations makes an exception for medication and products intended for particular dietary needs which are required during travel, notably baby food. The quantity of essential medication varies according to the duration of travel and the person concerned and for this reason may exceed the limit of 100 millilitres.

Liquids bought in duty free shops located in the area beyond boarding pass inspection, as in Luxemburg Airport, are placed in a sealed plastic bag. There is no restriction on quantity. However, if after having made purchases in a tax free zone the passenger is to enter other airports in the Union European as a transit passenger and consequently their security checkpoints, it is highly recommended that the bag should be kept sealed and the receipts retained as proof of purchase. On the following page you will find the official information bulletin for passengers published by the Union European.

New security measures in airports

Important precision on the limitation of liquids on board of airplanes concerning medication and products intended for particular dietary needs
After a number of complaints from diabetics as some airlines and some airports ask them to limit the quantity of insulin carried in their hand luggage to the amount necessary for the outward journey, the Association of European Airlines (AEA) would like to make some precisions in order to avoid a too strict application of the new directive for patients and diabetics.

In fact, the regulation allows passengers to carry with them medication and products intended for particular dietary needs which they will require during their journey. The term “journey” covers the outward flight, the time spent at the destination and the return flight. Therefore, its meaning is completely different to the term “flight”.

Bulky hand luggage

Would you like to carry bulky luggage (e.g. musical instruments, cello, for instance…) or fragile luggage on board which may block or take up an extra seat? Whether or not you need to take up the seat, you must pay the price of an extra ticket minus air taxes.

Would you like to reserve an extra seat for your own personal comfort? The price for an extra seat will be the price of a ticket for an adult minus air taxes. For an extra child’s seat, the price will be the price of a ticket for a child minus air taxes.
