TRAVELLING WITH PETS

You can travel with your pets on board under certain conditions.
The rules about pets on planes may vary between countries. Please read carefully the information about documents and transport rules below for a safe and comfortable trip.

 

GENERAL INFORMATION AND REGULATIONS

Please be aware that only dogs and cats are accepted on board (all other types of animals are not accepted). Only a total of 3 pets in cabin and 1 pet in hold (Q400) or 2 pets in hold (Boeing) are accepted in each aircraft.

Travelling with animals

Travelling with your pet? Luxair is pleased to welcome them on board either in cabin or in hold. Please book your trip in advance and carefully prepare all the necessary documents.


Please also note that your pet cannot travel in cabin or in hold on Luxair flights to/from the following destinations:
•    United Kingdom
•    United Arab Emirates

•    Senegal


It is essential for your pet to travel in the best conditions of comfort and safety. For this reason, we carefully detailed all the important information you need to know and respect to ensure that your trip takes place in the best way possible.

 

A pet cannot travel in hold from and to the following destination for operational reasons : Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport

The rules and regulations about pets on planes vary between destinations. You’ll need original copies of all the necessary documents:


For EU members, it is mandatory that dogs, cats have:
•    An EU passport for animals indicating anti‐rabies inoculation within a minimum of 30 days before the departure and within a maximum of 3 years before departure.
•    A microchip identification (tattoo valid before the 3rd of July 2012), (Regulation 998/2003/CE). Dogs must be identified electronically (microchip) in the 4 months after birth.

•    Additional treatment required for flights to/from Dublin (Ireland): All dogs must have been treated for tapeworms before each visit. The tapeworm treatment must contain praziquantel and must be administered by a veterinarian no less than 24 hours (1 day) and no more than 120 hours (5 days) before the scheduled arrival time of the dog in Ireland.

 

For NON EU members, it is mandatory that dogs, cats have:
•    An EU passport for animals indicating anti‐rabies inoculation within a minimum of 30 days before the departure and within a maximum of 3 years before departure.
•    A titration a neutralizing antibody (EU Regulation n°998/200)
•    Health certificate issued by an official veterinarian (EU commission n°2011/874)

•    Additional treatment required for flights to/from Dublin (Ireland): All dogs must have been treated for tapeworms before each visit. The tapeworm treatment must contain praziquantel and must be administered by a veterinarian no less than 24 hours (1 day) and no more than 120 hours (5 days) before the scheduled arrival time of the dog in Ireland.

 

If an animal is refused transport or not allowed to enter a country because it has not had the required vaccinations and documents, the owner must return the animal at own expenses.

 

Please note that children travelling alone with the “Unaccompanied minors” service are not allowed to travel with a pet in cabin.

TRANSPORT IN CABIN, PETS LESS THAN 8KG

1/ Book 

The fare for the transport in the cabin is 70 € per flight per animal (in economy - free of charge in business class).

Please book your pet in cabin at least 72 hours before departure online, at your travel agency or by calling the Customer Service Centre, (+352) 24561.

In case you booked a flight to a LuxairTours destination (flight number range LG100 - LG999), you can book your pet in cabin here.

Please note that in case of package booking, you must contact us to get the approval from the hotel to accept your animal. 

 

2/ Prepare

One passenger can only carry one pet in one crate (soft bag or box) . Two animals in one crate is forbidden.

If you are traveling with more than one pet, passengers accompanying the pets will not be allowed to sit in the same row. The seat allocation is done by Luxair and is for free.
The fare for the transport in the cabin is 70 € per flight per animal (in economy).

 

Please prepare carefully all the documents described above and fill in and sign the form H402 "Transport of animals in the cabin" and show it at check-in

 

Be sure your animal is able to stand or sit comfortably in its traveling cage.
Your pet can only be accepted in the cabin if it is not heavier than 8 kilos (crate included) and if the crate
(Soft bag or box) in which the pet is carried does not exceed:

 

•    (Length) 45 x (depth) 23 x (height) 25cm or
•    (Length) 45 x (depth) 42 x (height) 20cm

 

>EXAMPLE

 

You can bring a closed soft bag or a box adapted to transport animals following the dimensions above but a soft bag is recommended. The soft bag or box shall leave enough space for your pet to move, breathe and have a good stay on-board.

 

3/ At the airport  

•    Please be aware that only counter check-in is feasible. No web, mobile or kiosk check-in is possible to register your pet
•    Please prepare carefully all the documents described above and fill in and sign the form H402 "Transport of animals in the cabin" and show it at check-in
•    It is highly recommended to check-in 2 hours before departure to ensure that you have enough time to complete all necessary procedures

 

4/ Onboard

Please note that your pet must remain in its soft bag or crate during the entire flight. You shall not, under any circumstances, take your pet out of its box.


TRANSPORT IN HOLD, PETS MORE THAN 8KG

1/ Book 

The fare for the transport in the hold is 140 € per flight per animal.

Please book your pet in hold at least 72 hours before departure online, at your travel agency or by calling the Customer Service Centre, (+352) 24561.

In case you booked a flight to a LuxairTours destination (flight number range LG100 - LG999), you can book your pet in hold here.

Please note that in case of package booking, you must contact us to get the approval from the hotel to accept your animal. 

 

2/ Prepare 

Your pet can only be accepted in the hold if it is not heavier than 50 kilos (crate included). Two animals cannot be transported in one crate. Be sure your animal is able to stand or sit comfortably in its traveling cage. The instructions below will help you check whether the crate has the right size:

 

-    Height: your pet can stand without touching the top
-    Length: your pet’s length from nose to base of the tail, plus the distance from its elbow to the ground
-    Width: twice the width of your pet’s shoulder blades

 

The maximum size of the crate shall be :

  • Max length: 115cm
  • Max width : 60cm
  • Max height : 85 cm

Please prepare carefully all the documents described above and fill in and sign the H184 “Waiver of responsibility for carriage of pets”  and show them at check-in

 

NOTE

The cage must be properly sealed, watertight, claw-proof, and escape-proof, and must allow your pet to be given food and water and cleaned without it escaping from the cage or injuring the handling staff.

It must have ventilation holes on more than one side, and be easy to recognize as a pet cage. 

Cages for carrying pets in the cabin are not suitable for carrying them in the hold. You can only transport one animal per cage.

Your pet will be taken in charge by our assistance service at the check-in desk. We will take care of it until it arrives at its destination. However, in the case of a connecting flight, Luxair is only responsible for the routes it operates. Please find the information on the concerned airline's website and contact them for more information.

  • •    The container must be made of hard plastic or fiberglass 
    •    If the container has wheels, they must be removed. If they are retractable, they must be taped securely in place
    •    The door must have a centralized locking mechanism that locks in 2 places: at the top and at the bottom of the door 
    •    The door hinges must extend beyond the horizontal extrusions located above and below the door by 1.6 cm / 5/8 in 
    •    The 2 halves of the container must be fastened together by bolts. All other lateral closing mechanisms are strictly prohibited. Another locking mechanism may be used in conjunction with bolts 
    •    The animal must be able to stand, with its head completely straight, without touching the roof of the container. It should also be able to turn around and lay down comfortably
    •    The container must contain separate food and water dishes, both of which must be empty, secured to the floor and refillable without opening the cage 

  • •    The bottom of the container may be covered with a blanket, newspaper or other absorbent material. Straw is prohibited. 
    •    The animal must not be wearing a leash or a muzzle. These items cannot be left in the cage. 
    •    The animal must not show signs of physical weakness or injury and must not have taken tranquilizers. 

NOTE

Special container requirements for dangerous dog breeds

Compliant with IATA regulations, special crates are required for fighting dog breeds.
•    The container or crate must be made of wood, metal, synthetic materials, weld mesh or wire mesh.
•    Additional design principles regarding the frame, sides, floor, top and opening also apply.
•    No part of the crate may be made of plastic.
•    The opening must be made of heavy-duty wire mesh, metal or reinforced wood and must have a secure means of fastening that cannot be opened accidentally.
•    The container openings must be small enough to ensure that the animal cannot get any part of its body through them and guarantee protection from biting or scratching by the animal.

  • Transport of snub nose dogs in hot season is not recommended. These animals have difficulty in maintaining a normal body temperature in hot weather. To ensure its well-being, Luxair will not accept any snub-nosed pet in the hold.

     

    List of flat, short or snub-nosed animals that are not allowed to be transported in hold. Some breeds may not be accepted in cabin as those are classified as fighting dogs (see next section):

     

    Dogs (non-exhaustive list): Affenpinscher, American Bully, American Pit Bull Terrier, Pit Bull, American Staffordshire,”Amstaff”, Boston terrier, Boxer, Brussels Griffon, Bulldog (all types), Cavalier King Charles, Chow Chow, Shih-Tzu, English Toy Spaniel, Prince Charles Spaniel, Japanese Chin/Japanese Spaniel,  Lhasa Apso, Mastiffs (all types), Pekingese, Shar-Pei, Chinese Shar-Pei, Pug (all types), Staffordshire bull terrier, ”Staffys”, Tibetan, Chihuahua, boxer, pug.

     

    Cats (non-exhaustive list): Burmes, Exotic Shorthair, Himalayan, Persian, and Scottish Fold

  • Animals classified as fighting or dangerous dogs may only be transported in special crates and exclusively in hold (see the crates characteristics below):

    Dog breeds classified as dangerous dogs (for example only): 

     

    Dogs (non-exhaustive list): American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Bull Terrier (Miniature Bull Terriers are not classified as fighting dogs), American Bulldog, Dogo Argentino, Karabash (Kangal) (Anatolian Shepherd Dog), Caucasian Ovcharka (Caucasian Shepherd Dog), Rottweiler, Mastiffs, Tosas, Fila Brasileiro

3 / At the airport 

•    Please be aware that only counter check-in is feasible. No web, mobile or kiosk check-in is possible to register your pet
•    Please prepare carefully all the documents described above and fill in and sign the H184 “Waiver of responsibility for carriage of pets”  and show them at check-in
•    We highly recommend you to check-in 2 hours before departure to ensure that you have enough time to complete all necessary procedures


SERVICE ANIMALS, SEEING-EYE AND ASSISTANCE DOGS

A service animal is certified and trained individually to assist a person with a disability e.g. guide dogs, hearing dogs, diabetic alert dogs, seizure alert dogs, wheel chair support. Only dogs are accepted as service animals.

Dog assistance

 

1/ Book

We offer the transport of service animals without a container and free of charge. Please inform the Customer Service Centre, (+352) 2456-1, at least 72 hours before departure. The traveler must hold a valid medical certificate indicating the necessity of the service dog.

 

Luxair does not accept a service dog on flights to/from the United Arab Emirates, Senegal and United Kingdom (Manchester). Service dogs are accepted to/from United Kingdom (London City) subject to the applicable legislation. For further details please contact our Customer Service Centre, (+352) 2456-1.

 

Please also note that some countries do not accept Assistance Dogs. Please check local regulation of your destination country before your trip. Due to local customs regulations, recognized assistance dogs are not permitted on these routes. 
 

2/ Prepare

The size and weight restrictions don’t apply to Assistance Animals for disabled passengers. Please check the “General information and regulations” website section regarding all the health and customs documents needed to travel with your Assistance dog.
Your dog must be identified by the code SVAN (Service Animals).


Luxembourg Service Animals are registered according to the “Loi du 22 juillet 2008 relative à l’accessibilité des lieux ouverts au public aux personnes handicapées accompagnées des chiens d’assistance, art. 2” and are carrying a specific medal and a passport delivered by the government.


If your service dog is registered in another country, the EU Pet Passport or veterinary health certificate must be supported with documentation confirming that the guide/assistance dog is affiliated to one of the following organizations:


•    International Guide Dog Federation
•    Assistance Dogs International (ADI)

 

Your dog must be trained to be obedient to your commands and must behave appropriately in public (in other words, no barking, growling, or jumping up at people or other animals).Please note that when you travel with your assistance dog, you are not allowed to bring your pet in cabin.

 

3/ At the airport 

•    Please be aware that only counter check-in is feasible. No web, mobile or kiosk check-in is possible to register your pet
•    Please prepare carefully all the documents described above and in the “General information and regulations” section and fill in and sign the H184 “Waiver of responsibility for carriage of pets” (download here)  and show them at check-in
•    We highly recommend to check-in 2 hours before departure to ensure that you have enough time to complete all necessary procedures

 

4/ On board 

Your service dog: 

•    Must remain on a leash at all times
•    Must be attached by its lead to your safety belt during take-off, landing and whenever the seat belt signs are switched on 
•    May not sit on your seat under any circumstances
•    Cannot obstruct the aisles inside the aircraft
•    The dog must be trained to be obedient to your commands and must behave appropriately in public (in other words, no barking, growling, or jumping up at people or other animals)

 

Luxair recommends securing the dog with a harness rather than a collar. 

Customers whose service animals cannot be safely accommodated in the cabin should be offered:


•    Transportation of the animal in a crate in the hold, free of charge, in accordance with company policy and aircraft restrictions
•    To travel on a later flight

 

 

Emotional support animals (ESAN)
Emotional support dogs are not considered service dogs and can be transported following the same rules as pets in cabin or pets in hold.
